'Sex' and 'Gender' Fields

Patient Sex and Gender Fields

Distinguishing between Gender and Sex is vital for delivering tailored and inclusive care. The addition of the Sex field in patient demographics complements the existing Gender field, ensuring that you can provide more individualized and comprehensive care. By capturing both biological characteristics and individual identities, we aim to support precise medical treatment and address the diverse needs of all patients, fostering an environment of respect and understanding.

If you missed the in-app message for us to bulk pass the gender value into the new sex field, it can be accessed by using this link

Field Functionality

The Sex field is automatically integrated into the features below, meaning that the assigned Sex will carry over automatically:

  • Claims
  • Prescriptions
  • Labs

Where and How to Edit Them

The Sex field has static options that should not be changed to ensure consistency. The options available in the Sex field are:

  • Female
  • Male
  • Intersex

The Gender field, on the other hand, supports the ability to add any additional genders you desire. For more details, please see our Custom Gender Article.

Mapping the Gender and Sex Fields

Both fields are pre-mapped and ready for use with the pre-built mapped demographics questions. You can quickly and easily add this mapped question by clicking the Plus (+) button next to the questionnaire/note template's name.

For more details on mapping, please see our Mapping Article.

Manually Mapping the Sex Field

If you wish to take a custom approach for your demographics questions or map the Sex field to other questions, follow these steps:

  1. Add a Mixed Controls question type.
  2. Open the field settings by clicking the blue gear icon at the top-right corner.
  3. Set the field Type to Radio Buttons.
  4. Set the Profile Mapping to Sex.
  5. Set the options to:
    • Female
    • Male
    • Intersex

Enter one option per line and limit the options to the three outlined above, as additional options will not carry over.

Updating the Gender Field in Patient Profiles

The patient's Gender can also be manually updated directly via the patient's profile. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open the patient Overview tab.
  2. Click Edit toward the top-right corner.
  3. Click on the Gender field and make the desired selection
  4. Click Save toward the top-right corner.
